The Reach and Impact of Social Media
This week in class we talked about the reach and impact social media has today. Social media affects everything from laws to music trends. In class we talked about how much social media, can impact someones decision a certain product. People are now using avenues such as Facebook, in making decisions about travel. The video we watched in class really shows you; just how important social media is today. Seeing the actual numbers on video really put it into prospective for me. I started to think about the reach of social media; and found an interesting article about just how far it reaches. The article talks about, how The Weather Channel is now naming winter storms for social media reasons. The Weather Channel decided to name these storms, so people can access important news easier. Using the storms name with a hash tag, can take you to any information about the storm. This is such a great way to get important weather information out there. I know when I think about the weather, social media is not the first thing that comes to mind. It is amazing to see just how far social media can reach, and this particular issues has a huge impact on people.

I think that you made some interesting points in your post as well. For instance, I didn't know that The Weather Channel decided to name these storms, so people can access important news easier. The magnitude of social media definitely has a huge impact on people. I wouldn't consider myself to be a social media savvy person, but it's so easy to use that it's hard not to engage in social media. I use social media more a lot. I love to shop but of course as a college student, I’m broke. So, I like to use social media as a way to save money on products I like. I like everything on Facebook because companies give discounts and even give out free products just for liking their Facebook pages.
ReplyDeleteYou also made some very valid points in you comment to my post. I forgot that Facebook owned InstaGram and you’re right about having to use Facebook to sign into many other social media sites. I think that Facebook has staying power and are able to adapt just like many of our classmates mentioned. Someone else commented on my post and they said they believe that the actual Facebook site we have come to love and hate will disappear or evolve into something else; and I would agree.
That is an interesting question when we started naming storms. After reading your article I understood more but it still raising many more questions like why and how did each name get chosen? This is an example though of communication through social networking in an interesting way. From the beginning of communication, man has anyways found a way to send message over large distances in creative ways like Morse code. Now sending news an about a storm while using a name would help for faster understanding and delivery. You link was thought-provoking and I would like to now know more about different storm names and their origin.
